December 4, 2005 - UNDP, Tehran municipality raise public awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention

Tehran, December 4, 2005 - UNDP and the Municipality of Tehran are working together on raising awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention.

The two organizations have undertaken twenty half-day workshops/advocacy sessions in the capital to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS threat. Speaking at the workshop series closing ceremony held in the Shafagh Park Culture House on 30 November, the Director of Tehran Municipalities Healthy City Unit, Dr Ostad Taghizadeh indicated that the Unit took an integrated and holistic approach to preventive medicine and local development. He also described cooperation with UNDP as being "useful in supporting the Tehran population to become aware of HIV-AIDS and related concerns".

During the workshops, facilitated mainly by Dr Farahani of the Municipality and Dr. Pourmalek of UNDP, HIV/AIDS prevention was explained and advocated as part of the broader UNDP-led Millennium Development Goals campaign in the country. The target groups were health volunteers working in the city's various districts and also the general public.

UNDP intends to continue working closely with Tehran Municipality on health, poverty reduction and municipal management issues.

Although current HIV/AID's prevalence rates are low in the country, the danger of cumulative processes taking hold are very real, and Iran is now gearing up to protect itself on this front.
