Gender
"Opening our eyes and acting vigorously in favor of the lives and future of the poorest women is probably the single most important key to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015." Ad Melkert, UNDP Associate Administrator
60% of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people are women, but women’s voices and lived experiences have been largely missing in debates on poverty, macroeconomic policies and rules-setting processes in national, regional and international bodies. This is due, in part, to the low level of representation of women in decision-making bodies as a whole – including in parliaments and Governments as well as private-sector and industry associations.
As a crosscutting issue, addressing gender equality is a core commitment of UNDP. UNDP's “gender in development” approach is designed to ensure the fullest participation of women and men in development activities.

UNDP Gender Equality Strategy
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are about inclusive development. Despite the progress that has been made, six out of ten of the world’s poorest people are still women and girls, only 16 percent of the world’s parliamentarians are women, two thirds of all children shut outside the school gates are girls and, both in times of armed conflict and behind closed doors at home women are still systematically subjected to violence. Gender equality and women’s empowerment are human rights that lie at the heart of development and the achievement of the MDGs by 2015.

UNDP Iran and Gender
UNDP Iran integrates gender equality and women’s empowerment in its main areas of work, namely poverty reduction, good governance, crisis prevention and recovery, response to HIV/AIDs, and environment and sustainable development in order to take the specific needs and roles of women, the potential obstacles facing them, and the contributions they can make towards achieving development goals into consideration.
UNDP Iran is therefore committed to support capacity development of its national partners to adopt approaches that advance gender equality and women’s empowerment and in this way further support the country’s progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
